ORANGUTAN HAMPIR PUNAH

Kesi is very special because of the things she has achieved despite her physical challenges. Though she is one-handed (the other one is suspected to have been chopped off by an illegal poacher) Kesi has never felt inferior among her peers. Instead, she continues to prove them that she is just as skilled as the others, if not more so.

Dodo was brought to BOSF-Samboja Lestari by Indonesia Forestry officials when he was less than a year old. His mother, like so many others, had been killed when a palm oil company clearcut their forest home and converted it into an oil palm plantation.

Named after the paramedic who saved him, one-year-old Miko was confiscated in Kerang Bengkirai. A recent arrival, this tiny little ape came to Nyaru Menteng dehydrated and suffering an injury to his hand. He quickly recovered, thriving under the care of the BOS Foundation medics and babysitters. For the next 6 years, he will need to be taught how to be an Orangutan.

Henrik is a male orangutan who was rescued from a nearby forest after being abandoned by his mother. He was discovered by a couple of boar hunters on the skirts of a forest area in Kasongan. Playfull is a word that best describes this young orangutan, as he loves to be in the company of friends and is quick to learn new skills everyday.

Ruthie has a habit of fooling her caregivers to take her to Forest school early in the morning. Mid-way to their destination, Ruthie usually takes off and hides in her favorite places around the rehabilitation facility-kitchen and clinic.

Nody is known to the caregivers as a 'groundskeeper' - in that he prefers to stay ground and roll around in the mud, or splash his arms and legs in the water. Nody can spend an entire day playing on the river banks, as if dreaming of distant lands at the end of the river flow.

Fio had a tragic start to life. The attempt to rescue her and her mother was only a partial success. Fio's mother did not survive, but fortunately we were able to give Fio another chance. She gets a ton of love and support from her babisitters at BOSF-Nyaru Menteng and she is gaining the confidence she needs to become an independent orangutan.

Nita has grown more rebellious. She ignored babysitters' orders. She even lead her friends and went home ahead of schedule to play on the field near the babyhouse which located relatively distant from the Forest School. Nita could go back and forth Forest School-babyhouse 3 times a day.
