BUKIT BATIKAP PROTECTION FOREST

ABOUT
A 456,000-hectare conservation area of protection rainforest located entirely within Murung Raya district in the province of Central Kalimantan. With elevations ranging from 100 to 1,580 m, this nearly pristine primary forest is also part of the Muller-Schwaner Mountain Range.

BUKIT BAKA BUKIT RAYA NATIONAL PARK

ABOUT
A National Park composed of approximately 181,090-hectares of protected forest within the Schwaner Mountain Range on the border between the provinces of West and Central Kalimantan. This forest not only serves as home to the newly reintroduced orangutan population, but also as a vital water catchment area for multiple river basins in Central and West Kalimantan.

NYARU MENTENG

ABOUT
The Nyaru Menteng Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre is located in Nyaru Menteng Arboretum, about 30 kilometres from downtown Palangka Raya in the province of Central Kalimantan. This site oversees many BOSF programs in Central Kalimantan including undertakings in rescue, rehabilitation, release, sanctuary care, habitat conservation, and community development.

OUR WORK HERE

• Rehabilitation Centre: currently over 300 orangutans under our care
• Forest School and Rehabilitation: here rescued orangutans are given the opportunity to learn natural skills in forest school and socialise in the socialisation complexes
• Healthcare and Quarantine facilities: a dedicated team of veterinarians treats all rescued animals, in addition to all the resident animals in the centre
• Long-term Sanctuary: life-long care is provided for orangutans unable to return to their natural habitat due to either physical or behavioural disabilities
• Eco-Volunteering: animal lovers can sign-up to stay in on-site accommodations for 2 or 4 weeks during which they contribute by partaking in enrichment design, animal husbandry, site maintenance, and reforestation
• Visitor Information Centre: this facility allows tourists to learn more about orangutans and the conservation efforts undertaken by BOSF, while glazing upon the rehabilitation process in the adjoining socialisation complex.

MAWAS CONSERVATION AREA

ABOUT
A protected area of 309,000-hectares including peatland habitat that sustains one of the largest remaining orangutan populations with an estimated 2550 individuals. The area encompasses two main districts — South Barito and Kapuas districts — in the province of Central Kalimantan.

• Forest Restoration: a multifaceted approach of natural resource management, sustainable community development, and replanting projects contributes to the continual process that safeguards critical orangutan habitat
• Community Education and Empowerment: local communities are engaged by helping them to build capacity on the sustainable use of natural resources, educating the younger generation on conservation issues, and employing local people for their skills and for the purchasing of consumables
• Protection of a Wild Orangutan Population: by protecting the forest through regular patrols and mitigation of human-orangutan conflict, we can protect the orangutans and all wildlife within
• Wild Orangutan Research: here non-invasive research on wild orangutans based from the Tuanan Research Station includes behavioural sampling, population counts, and general projects on the ecology of the peat swamp forest

SALAT ISLANDS

ABOUT
A 2,089-hectare island cluster includes Badak Besar Island (496 hectares) and Badak Kecil (104 hectares), in the District of Pulang Pisau, in the province of Central Kalimantan. Here some orangutans take one step closer to freedom, while others find themselves in safe forested, sanctuary where they can live out their lives with support from our team of technicians and veterinarians.

RUNGAN RIVER ISLANDS

ABOUT
A 178-hectare island cluster includes three islands named as Kaja, Bangamat, and Palas, within the Rungan River, close to Sei Gohong in Central Kalimantan. Daily, teams of technicians provide supplementary food for the rehabilitant orangutan populations and collect behavioural data to assess the individuals for wild release suitability.

SAMBOJA LESTARI

ABOUT
A former area of deforested, degraded, and burnt land, Samboja Lestari now includes nearly 1,800-hectares of restored forest, located about 38 kilometres from Balikpapan in East Kalimantan. This site serves as the base for BOSF programs in East Kalimantan including undertakings in rescue, rehabilitation, release, sanctuary care, habitat conservation, and community development.

• Samboja Lodge: this ecolodge facility gives tourists the opportunity to experience a tropical forested oasis and learn more about our efforts to conserve Bornean orangutans from the comfort of this lodge, inspired by local, Dayak architecture and handicraft traditions

KEHJE SEWEN ECOSYSTEM RESTORATION CONCESSION FOREST

ABOUT
Established as an Ecosystem Restoration Concession (ERC), on 18 August 2010, by Restorasi Habitat Orangutan Indonesia (RHOI), a company founded by the BOS Foundation, the Kehje Sewen ERC is a protected area covering 86,450-hectares of forest, and is located in the Muara Wahau District, East Kutai Regency in East Kalimantan. In the local Dayak Wehea language, the name, Kehje Sewen, translates to orangutan.

JUQ KEHJE SWEN

TENTANG KAMI
This 82-hectare forest island located in Muara Wahau District, within the East Kutai Regency in the province of East Kalimantan was officially inaugurated to be a BOS Foundation Pre-release Island in September 2017. Daily, teams of technicians provide supplementary food for the rehabilitant orangutan populations and collect behavioural data to assess the individuals for wild release suitability.
