Every dry season, Kalimantan's forests face one of their greatest threats: forest and land fires.
For wild orangutan, one fire can mean losing everything. The forest they call home, the food they depend on, and their chance of survival. These forests are also home to countless other species and include some of the world’s most important tropical peatland ecosystems and carbon stores.
The Fire Season Is Already Here
This is not a future threat. Fires are already affecting forests within Kalimantan. In Mawas, more than 43 hectares of peat swamp forest within BOS Foundation’s conservation landscape have already been burned and affected. And the fire season is far from over.
Every hectare lost puts wildlife habitat at risk, damages fragile peatland ecosystems that can take decades or even centuries to recover, and releases stored carbon into the atmosphere.
And the fire season is far from over.
Indonesia is now experiencing an active El Niño event. BMKG warns that the 2026 dry season is expected to be drier and longer than normal in many parts of the country,, increasing the risk of drought and forest and land fires.
A wildfire can spread rapidly and destroy a forest in a matter of hours. Recovery, however can take decades, and some ecosystems may never fully return to their original condition.
We have seen this before.
During the devastating fires of 2019, fire threatened critical areas within BOS Foundation's conservation landscape, including the Forest School. Without strong prevention and rapid response, years of orangutan rehabilitation, habitat protection, and restoration can be put at risk in just a matter of hours.
What takes years to protect can be lost in a single fire.

The best time to fight a forest fire is before it starts. That is why BOS Foundation teams are working throughout the dry season to detect fire early, respond quickly, and reduce the conditions that allow fires to spread.
