Mema's calm and gentle nature has made her a favourite among her fellow orangutans. Through her daily adventures in Forest School, she learned to forage, climb, build nests, and become increasingly independent. Today, she continues her journey on a pre-release island, one step closer to life in the wild.
BACKGROUND STORY
Mema came to rehabilitation centre in a terrible state, as a weak baby weighing only 2.3 kilograms. She was found by a local villager who claimed to have come across her whilst searching for firewood in a burned peat area. He took Mema to the local village chief, who reported the finding to our team at Nyaru Menteng. Today, Mema has reached a proud turning point on Bangamat Pre-Release Island. She has become more independent, exploring deeper into the forest while naturally rebuilding her wild instincts.
