My name is Rika Safira and I am 24 years old. I had been working for Restorasi Habitat Orangutan Indonesia (RHOI) for 8 months before the opportunity arose to accompany our joint BOSF/ RHOI team on an orangutan release in August.
Forest fires have severely damaged or cleared large swathes of orangutan habitat across Kalimantan.
After a fire outbreak that burnt 30 hectares of rehabilitated forest at BOS Foundation’s Orangutan Reintroduction Center at Samboja Lestari in early September, another fire occurred in Samboja Lestari on September 23rd.
Forest fires occur regularly every year in Central and East Kalimantan, which significantly impacts both our orangutans and staff and the overall BOS Foundation activities.
