Monita seems to know the technicians' feeding schedule better than anyone else on Bangamat Pre-Release Island. Once feeding time is over, she wastes no time heading back into the forest, where she spends the rest of her day foraging and exploring on her own. This behavior is a clear sign of the growing independence she'll need for life in the wild.
BACKGROUND STORY
Our rescue team from Nyaru Menteng worked together with the Central Kalimantan BKSDA to rescue a baby female orangutan in Pangkoh village, Pulang Pisau Regency, in early June 2018. A local villager claimed to have found the baby, later named Monita, stranded alone in a forest area near an oil palm plantation, and decided to take her home and keep her for several days. The now 8-year-old Monita has since grown into a graceful individual, displaying impressive intelligence and sharp observational skills on Bangamat Pre-Release Island.
