Do you remember those orangutans?
The support given to these orangutans helped them to go through an arduous rehabilitation process that culminated with a few of them reaching their ultimate goal: freedom! Cinta, rescued in 2013, is set to be released this December with several other orangutans after spending 10 years undergoing rehabilitation (read about the release candidates here). It is finally time for us to return the gardeners of the forest to where they belong.
We plan to safely return these orangutans to the wild so that they can live freely in Kalimantan rainforests. Once released, our teams will continue to monitor the orangutans in order to record their activities and be on standby for emergency support.
Beni, rescued in 2016, is currently in the last stage of the rehabilitation process. He is honing his skills to survive in the wild by living on a pre-release island. Orangutans in our care must go through rigorous training and prove they have mastered survival skills on the pre-release islands to ensure they will thrive after being released back into the wild.
Despite our many achievements, we still have hundreds of other orangutans in our care waiting for their chance to be free. With every successful release, we are one step closer to securing a safe and thriving future for orangutans.
