THE JOURNEY OF A WANDERER TO FREEDOM IN THE WILD
Runtu, a 23-year-old female orangutan, is one of six successful releases into TNBBBR.
Several years ago, a number of sun bears were transferred from the BOS Foundation’s Nyaru Menteng Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre to our special sun bear sanctuary at Samboja Lestari. Asri is one of these sun bears, and was transferred three years ago, when she was just three years old.
When Asri was first rescued, she was found with her right hind leg severely entangled in a trap, which had caused extensive damage. Due to the extent of her wounds, and with no possibility of recovery, our team had no choice but to amputate Asri’s right leg.
Despite having only three legs, Asri is very good at climbing! She is an active bear and loves to socialise with other sun bears. She particularly likes to play with India, Deni, Malinau, Barbie, and Tapir.
Asri is now six years old and has a long life ahead of her, with sun bears typically living up to 30 years old in captivity. While she will never be able to go back to the wild, she is living her life surrounded by friends in the Samboja Lestari Sun Bear Sanctuary.
