HARMONY WITH NATURE & SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Every year on May 22, the world comes together to celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity. At this moment, we’re asked to reflect on the rich variety of life on Earth and the vital role it plays in sustaining the health of our planet. In 2025, the theme "Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development" calls on all of us—governments, organizations, communities, and individuals—to reimagine our relationship with nature and to work toward a future where development does not come at the expense of the ecosystems we depend on.

Why Biodiversity Matters

Biological diversity—or biodiversity—refers to the variety of all living organisms, including animals, plants, fungi, and microorganisms, as well as the ecosystems they form. Biodiversity provides us with essential services. For example, with the availability of free air and clean water, food sources and medicine from both animals and plants, safety from natural disasters, and a stable climate.

Despite its immense value, biodiversity around the world is declining at an alarming rate. Unsustainable land use, deforestation, pollution, overexploitation of natural resources, and climate change are among the leading causes. The consequences are not just environmental—they are also economic, social, and cultural.

This Year’s Theme “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development”

The 2025 theme highlights the urgency of balancing economic growth with ecological integrity. Sustainable development is only possible when we recognize that nature is not an obstacle to progress but a foundation of it.

"Harmony with Nature" emphasizes us to shifting from extractive practices to regenerative ones. Meanwhile, "Sustainable Development" highlights the significance of integrating local knowledge and the wisdom of indigenous peoples in conservation efforts. Moreover, it is also an effort to promote nature-based solutions in the agriculture industry, infrastructure, and urban planning.

This approach aligns with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which sets bold targets for 2030, including protecting at least 30% of the world’s land and oceans and restoring degraded ecosystems.

What Can We Do?

Everyone has a role to play in protecting biodiversity. Here are some ways we can contribute. First, by supporting sustainable businesses that use ethical sourcing and eco-friendly practices. In addition, these practices should also be balanced with the awareness of reducing waste and consumption, especially single-use plastics. Lastly, we should not just act alone, but we also need to spread information and educate others about the importance of biodiversity and sustainable development.

Governments and institutions must also take strong action to enforce environmental laws, integrate biodiversity into development planning, and ensure that sustainability is not just a goal but a standard.

Biodiversity is more than a collection of species—it’s a web of life that connects us all. By living in harmony with nature, we invest in a future where we can thrive together. Biodiversity Day 2025 is not just a celebration—it's a call to action. Let us embrace this opportunity to restore our connection with the Earth and ensure that sustainable development is guided by the wisdom of nature.
