EARTH DAY 2024: PLANET VS PLASTICS

Every year on April 22, we celebrate Earth Day to honour the planet that is home to us all. This year, with the theme "Planet vs Plastics," we recognise that we are in a war against the onslaught of plastic that threatens the sustainability of our Earth.

The world has been ensnared in a worsening plastic waste crisis. Each year, millions of tons of plastic are dumped into the ocean, threatening marine life and its ecosystems. Plastic waste also pollutes the air we breathe and the land we walk on. This is not just an environmental issue but also a public health concern with the potential to remain a threat for countless generations to come.

This year, as we celebrate Earth Day, let us strengthen our commitment to confront this challenge together by reducing our single-use plastic waste. From plastic straws to shopping bags, single-use plastics have become a serious threat to the environment. We need to change our consumer behaviour by choosing eco-friendly alternatives such as reusable products and recycling.

Environmental education also should be a priority at all levels, from schools to communities, as long-term, systematic change is also a necessity. By raising public awareness of the negative impacts of plastics, we can drive market change as we build greater demand for climate and environment-conscious businesses.

While humans have divided up the globe into countries, plastic knows no national borders. Therefore, strong international cooperation is needed to address this issue effectively. Forums such as the United Nations and other international conventions should be putting these issues at the forefront and rallying unified support. The development of eco-friendly technologies and alternative solutions also requires significant investment. Governments, private institutions, and non-profit organisations must work together to support research and implement sustainable solutions.

On Earth Day 2024, let us unite as global citizens in the war against plastics. We have the opportunity and responsibility to protect our planet for future generations. With collective action and strong commitment, we can create a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for our Earth.
