GRADUATION DAY

Beni, Meryl, Liti, and Sura, along with some friends graduated from our Forest School and moved on to the final stage of their rehabilitation! Check out their big move to the island and their first day experiencing a whole new side to life in the forest!

November 2021 marked an important moment for eight orangutans at the Nyaru Menteng Rehabilitation Centre, as they finally moved to the pre-release island of Badak Besar, which is located about four hours from the Centre.

Transporting the eight orangutans to Badak Besar Island involved two separate trips: the first trip took Beni, Sura, Meryl and Winey, and the second trip took Obama, Kejora, Susanne and Liti.

Our orangutan transfer team departed for the island via waterway, using a speedboat. The river journey took about four hours, from the Sei Gohong pier on the Rungan River, to the Kahayan River and all the way to Badak Besar Island.

This river route was used to avoid any unnecessary interactions with local residents, whom we are more likely to encounter when traveling in cars over land. All staff members and orangutans involved in the transfer were given a swab test for COVID-19 to ensure that they were not carrying the virus and potentially spreading it to a wider area.

MERYL’S BIG MOVE:

BENI’S BIG MOVE:

LITI AND SURA BIG MOVE:

They now have the opportunity to experience a whole new side of life in the forest as they refine their skills and continue their education – preparing them for the eventual release into their true wild home in the Bornean rainforest.

We’ve ensured that every donation supports the rehabilitation journey of Beni, Meryl, Sura, Liti, and all our forest school students - and, with your support, we can do it again!
