BALI: THE SPIRIT OF AN ELDERLY SUN BEAR AT SAMBOJA LESTARI
Among the elderly residents of the sanctuary, Bali is one of the most remarkable. Today, Bali has reached the age of around 45 years, which is considered very old for a sun bear.
After a 6-day expedition to locate previously-released orangutans, we finally managed to find one which we had not detected for quite some time: we found Juminten not far from Camp Lesik.
It was a relief to see Juminten in very good condition. We immediately followed her, and observed her happily eating forest fruits and young shoots.
Moments later, we spotted another orangutan moving around. It turned out to be Lesan, who followed Juminten everywhere she went.
Juminten repeatedly coerced Lesan into copulating, and they finally built nests in the same tree.
We are glad to see Juminten living happily in the Kehje Sewen forest. She was a pretty impressive sight in her natural habitat. While we have yet to locate Inge, Abbie and Leo, we are fairly certain that they, too, are living happily there.
