INSPIRING KOPRAL AND FRIENDS

Not every orangutan at the BOS Foundation’s rehabilitation centres will get the opportunity to return to the forest. These individuals, known as ‘unreleasable’ orangutans, are not able to live independently in the forest due to various reasons: infectious disease, physical disability, or a lack of the survival skills behaviours required to thrive in the wild, making a return to their natural home impossible.

BACKGROUND STORY

One of these unreleaseable orangutans is our inspiring Kopral. Kopral was kept as a pet in a cage until he escaped, climbing an electricity pole that electrocuted him and burned his arm. Unfortunately, his condition was so severe that both his arms had to be amputated when he arrived. Despite this, he was an outstanding student at forest school, climbing trees and building nests with his feet and mouth. Previously, Kopral had a best friend who always accompanied him, Shelton. Sadly, in 2022, Shelton passed away, leaving Kopral and all of us forever at the age of 14.
