NEC PLANTED MORE TREES

On Sunday of the last week in August, the BOS Foundation hosted a group from NEC Japan who visited us in Samboja Lestari, East Kalimantan. The NEC Team has visited several times now. Today, their activity started on Island 5. They walked from the Samboja Lodge to the island, accompanied by Vet Agus Irwanto. Lucky for them, they arrived in time for witnessing orangutan feeding.

After that, they went to the Sun Bear Sanctuary by car. In the sanctuary, Vet Agnes took over from Vet Agus and explained about sun bears. The journey then continued to the BOS Foundation’s Office where Windi, Samboja Lesatri Communications Coordinator, invited the group to the office tower. While enjoying the beautiful view from the top of the tower, the group listened to Windi’s explanation about the BOS Foundation, after which Windi answered their questions and casually chat with them.

Windi explained that the BOS Foundation in Samboja Lestari has several towers that we use to monitor the area periodically to see if there are hotspots / fires.

Next on the itinerary was tree planting activity. NEC and the BOS Foundation have agreed to an 8-year cooperation in maintenance and tree planting on several acres of land in Samboja Lestari. The group looked exhausted, yet they very much enjoyed planting trees. They enthusiastically took photos of their newly planted trees.

Then, the group returned to Samboja Lodge for lunch and rest, because in the afternoon they were going to visit the habitat of an endemic Bornean primate, the proboscis monkey. This area is located outside Samboja Lestari, approximately 15 kilometers from Samboja Lesatri, in an area called the Black River. Here, the group took a boat ride to see the proboscis monkeys playing in the trees along the river. They were also taken to some traditional fishermen villages around the proboscis monkey’s habitat. The full-day of activities was concluded with a delicious dinner.
