GUNDUL’S BLOOD SAMPLE RESULTS

Remember Gundul from Samarinda? She is an adult female orangutan from Samarinda - East Kalimantan who was rescued back on October 19, 2012 by the East Kalimantan Conservation and Natural Resources Authority (BKSDA) from a local resident of Samarinda and is now under the care of a conservation agency in West Kutai Regency, PT. Satwa Gunung Bayan Lestari (SGBL).

BKSDA requested The Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF) to provide medical services, health checks, and blood sampling for Gundul at the BKSDA Office in Samarinda after they rescued her.

Blood sampling in particular was conducted in order to obtain a comprehensive  overview of Gundul’s physical condition as it was widely reported  on internet-based social media that Gundul, a 21 year-old adult female orangutan was in a very bad condition and suffered from malnutrition.

The BOSF Medical Team, led by veterinarian Agus Irwanto conducted a thorough medical examination on Gundul. After examining Gundul’s teeth to determine her age, it was estimated that Gundul’s age was only around 12 – 13 years old, not 21 years old. Initial health checks showed she was healthy and did not suffer from malnutrition. However, vet Agus still took a blood sample and sent it to a laboratory for more thorough analysis.

Although the results took over two months to process, we are delighted to report that a few days ago, vet Agus received the final results and confirmed that Gundul was physically healthy at the time of rescue and did not suffer from malnutrition. Her hemoglobin level was normal indicating she was not anemic and the ketones and urea in her blood were also at a normal level. She also has no serious diseases which is very good news given her previous living conditions.
